Miles, the little blue Neon. February 2006-April 2009
Miles went to be in that used car lot in the sky yesterday, after giving his owner 3 years of driving love. Miles was originally purchased to replace Auto, the Nissan Altima, after Auto met his untimely end at mile marker 146 on the Florida Turnpike. After the crash of Auto, I swore I would never get behind the wheel of a car again. Most of you are aware that I did not get my drivers license until I was 21 and a half and was terrified of driving, to the point where I would drive across the street to Justin's apartment so he could drive to Publix for groceries. Auto helped me overcome my initial fears. Then, on a fateful October evening in 2005, Auto got turned upside down by a tire tread on the road and ended up driving into a concrete divider. At almost 80mph. In December 2005, Sarah and Jason went to Chicago and left me with Jonah and Asher, and Sarah's Hyundai Sonata. I got back behind the wheel but was not 100% certain about the whole driving thing. Enter Miles. In February 2006, when I knew driving again would have to be an eventuality, we found the little blue Dodge Neon I had always wanted. Now he could be mine. Mom bought me a Gator tag. We fixed his brakes and took him home. He made me feel safe again.
Unfortunately, Miles spent a lot of time in and out of the repair shops. He was fixed repeatedly, although we kept asking at what point do we stop trying life sustaining measures. Mom, Dad and I all decided that if Miles could get me through graduate school and my first few months of working, everything would be awesome (I would have money for a new car with a j-o-b). Miles was a workhorse. He did his job. He got me through graduation. He got me through 9 months of work. But he got tired. His AC stopped working in July, although we were able to recharge him periodically and he would blow cold air for a couple of days at a time. He stopped starting. These last few weeks, I had to put the car in neutral, push it out and perform a rolling start. It was pretty fun sometimes, but not always.
John and I had been car shopping for the better part of a month. I test drove (Toyota: Corolla, Prius; Ford: Focus, Fusion; Dodge: Caliber; Nissan: Versa, Altima; Honda: Civic Hybrid, Civic). I researched. I read everything Edmunds.com could offer me. It was exhausting. I negotiated my ass off.
Yesterday, I reached my end. I talked and negotiated as low as I had the energy for. The guy agreed to my price. I met mom at the dealership (technically, she owned Miles). We sat for almost 5 hours (mind you, I did not have to test drive or pick out my car or negotiate). They offered me 500 for Miles. I wanted 1800. We settled on $600. (sad)
But in the end, I have Junior! He is an atomic blue (duh!) 2009 Honda Civic. I am excited for our future together! I am hopeful that he will bring the same kind of excitement and love of driving to my life that Miles did. In fact, his name is Junior because he is of a similar color blue, has a sunroof and is grey interior, just like Miles! And, the dealership ordered him a Gator tag! oh! a-n-d, mom negotiated an orange pinstripe for his sides!
I cannot wait to share him with you all! In pictures and in stories! :) Here's to our future together, me and Junior. |

thank (insert your higher power here) that the state of Florida is merciful and swift with their license reporting! I am now officially FL PT24130! Everything (apparently) went as expected and I am licensed!
the relief is immense. Imagine being done with 8 years of school and having 2 months of vacation and not being able to enjoy them as fully as you could have (Christina, I know you are living this now too!). Today I cleaned my room (the living room) and I am debating putting Guitar Hero on my credit card as a congrats present to myself. I deserve it, right?! ;)
just waiting on the official job offer from Pinecrest now! I got an email from the Rehab director this morning congratulating me and saying that it is time to move me from Pinecrest student to Pinecrest employee! hooray!
and now I am off to find milk because it is 11:28 and I've been up for 5 hours without breakfast...
thanks also LJ world for all of your kind well wishes yesterday! I know they helped! :) |

[May. 21st, 2008|10:04 am] |
this morning was an adventure! I had no idea getting 3 boys ready for school and out the door was as much fun/work/an endurance fest/etc as it was ;)
Jonah got up first and got dressed. then I woke up Asher and he got dressed while I made breakfast for everyone. Then breakfast in shifts. Then I got Toby up and changed while Jonah brushed his teeth. Then Jonah got Toby's shoes on while I sang the alphabet song for Asher to brush his teeth. Then we piled in the car and I saw my mom parked behind us. Then I woke mom up and got her to come over and move her car. Then, we made it to Jonah's bus stop with time to spare (go me!) Next, we drove Asher to Wellington Elementary and brought the pink cookies into his classroom. Toby and I RACED over to Target and got there by 8:07 at which point I was certain there would be no more Wii Fits left. Boy was I wrong. I carried him in as I ran and when I saw the display, there were like 20 of them. So I took 2 - one for me, one for the Smiths. we paid, walked out like two proud dudes, me and Toby. We dropped pink cookies off at Jonah's school. Now we are back here watching 'the movie about cars' which is really Cars for another couple of minutes before it is time to get Ashie from the bus stop. wow! then some play time, lunch, Jonah from the bus stop and back to Boca to visit mommy and Miriam!
but now I have Wii Fit. And I was all worried that I didn't pre-order it. worked out for me this time ;) |

[May. 20th, 2008|03:10 am] |
i got the phone call about an hour ago that put me on Kiki patrol today and tomorrow! :) Sarah and Jason are on their way to Boca, where Miriam will make her grand entrance in the world. Hopefully there. When they called the midwife, she said, "hurry! someone else has already delivered on 95 tonight!"
as an aside, all three of the boys were born on full-moon Tuesdays :) At 2:30am, so long as Miriam comes within the next 21:30, that would make her just like her big brothers! |

UF DPT class of 2008 |
this was a crazy weekend! Thursday, we had to defend our final paper. There was a poster presentation and question and answer defense and when it ended, all of us were like, WOW! It was amazing and a little sad all at once. I was supposed to drive to Wellington right after to be in the WPB area for pre-wedding stuff (Beth and Patrick), but drove as far south as Micanopy before deciding that I really needed to spend the night partying it up with the DPT kids. I changed, met the crowd at Chilis, had dinner, went back to Drew's, hung out, and then we met up with EVERYONE (just about, literally) at Market Street. Time was spent there and at Nellys and then I crashed on Drew's couch.
Friday morning, I snuck out of his apt early early (6:30 after a 3:30am arrival) and began the drive to WPB. Spent the day doing some pampering of me (mani and pedi) and then got Jonah from the bus stop. Pre-wedding fun-ness began at Bear Lakes CC at 4pm. Rehearsal and then dinner. yummy! After dinner, B and P handed out wedding party gifts. Everyone else got a bottle of wine or something like that, but I got a Wii messenger bag seeing as how I am always carrying it around in the box. Then, they made me close my eyes and they brought out the most beautiful orange and blue triple mat diploma frame I have ever seen (Patrick's mom owns a framing shop) and said that it wasn't just a special weekend for them, but for me as well. I am really supremely lucky to have friends like that who in the middle of something so beautiful and special as their own wedding, thought of me in a way like that. I hope they enjoy the trip to Disney I got them ;)
I drove home and got some sleep knowing that the rest of the weekend was going to be whirlwind-ish. Saturday morning, I had my hair cut and done for the wedding and met the rest of the girlies at the hair salon (I will post pics, but my hair has been cute and short since donating 10 inches in March and there wasn't any updo in my future). We had lunch at Panera (well, they did, I had a milk and cookies shake from cold stone!) and then headed over to BLCC for the getting ready. It was a wonderful wedding, the bride was more beautiful than anything I have ever seen and happy to boot, the groom was handsome and lively, the company was magnificent and the whole night was magical, really. I had an excellent time, saw the happy couple off in their limo and went home to crash on the couch.
Sunday I was probably the happiest girl in the whole wide world. scratch probably. I was the happiest girl in the whole wide world. I woke up at 5:15 with the biggest grin on my face and it never went away! We were on the road by 6am and with 2 stops, made it to Gainesville just before brunch. We had Dr. Paris from the Univ of St. Augustine speak to us about what it means to be doctors of PT and it was amazing. They had Albert and Alberta the alligators there and called our names to walk across a little stage and have our pictures taken with them and some faculty. When it was all over, we went back to B and P's house and mom and Kyle took naps while Dad and I hung out and waited for Jesse and Eric to get back from visiting Rachel and Adam after brunch.
At 4, Eric took me and dad to the O'Connell Center so I could line up with the other grads. Being the PHHP graduation only, it was a nice, short and sweet graduation. We marched in at 5:45 and got finished by 7:30ish. I wish I had the words to describe my emotions. They did all the silly awards first and then we were the first recognized graduates. They asked us to stand and then talked about being the first graduating class and the significance of the DPT and then conferred the degree on us and we all cheered and then we walked across that stage. I smiled and Dr. Bishop said my name right and I shook hands with the right people and smiled more. When it was all done, we walked around saying congrats to each other as, job well done, Dr. so-and-so. it was AWESOME!
As a family, we drove around campus and took pictures in all the right places. We did a lot at BHG Stadium. Then we went to the fountains by Criser and finally, we found a "Congrats Gator Grads" sign on campus and I jumped out of the car to stand by it while Jesse snapped away. We met my friend Albert and his family for dinner and enjoyed some not so great food with some really awesome people. As we were leaving (Albert and his family were going on a cruise the next day and after, his family is going back to South Africa and he is moving to Charlotte, NC with his now fiance Brenda), Albert took me aside and said, "it would have been a totally different experience if you weren't sitting next to me these last 3 years" and I couldn't have agreed more. |

| GOOFY! |
[Jan. 15th, 2008|11:16 am] |
1 half marathon 1 marathon 2 days, 4 parks 39.3 miles Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge finisher!!!
According to the Palm Beach Post, I was 15 people away from being Palm Beach County's last finisher, but with a 12,474th place finish, I did it! And with 6 minutes to spare too! Ryan and I decided that no matter how fast/slow we were going to run the half, the marathon would hurt regardless. So, we ran/walked the half in 3 hours and then made it our goal to finish the full in under the 7 hour limit. The half was great! We had a good time, were able to run a good portion of it, and felt really good afterwards, except for some serious thigh chafing (of which vaseline didnt help and biofreeze made excruciatingly worse). We made it over to the expo after the race to buy me some spandex to go under the running shorts (smartest idea ever). Jen, Bill and I went to Planet Hollywood at 4 to meet the team for the pasta dinner and ended up making NEW best friends. At dinner, Ryan, Shawna, Jen and Bill and I reminisced about our one year of friendship! :) Then I wandered out to make new friends for next year! We left there, I dropped them off at their hotel and went back to Ryan and Shawna's room. I fell asleep just as the New England-Jacksonville game started and 3:15 came calling again. I woke up, got me ready, went to pick up Jen and Bill, made it to the starting area, and then we were off for the full. We lost Jen about mile 7 and I was realllllly nervous she'd DNF. But at mile 21, we saw her approaching mile 20 and Ryan and I both felt a wave of relief. Jesse kept calling me on my cell (I had it because Shawna was watching us and Bill was getting updates on Jen) to see where I was. I remembering being like, "dude, im running a marathon here, ill call you when i finish!" We crossed the line, Ryan and I together, and then I heard someone scream Katie! It was Jesse and Eric!!!! Thats why she kept calling: she didnt want to miss me! It was soooo awesome to see someone at the finish line for me!
I got a massage after, showered, and then we grabbed lunch. I drove to Wellington and was the stiffest, sorest person ever when I got out of the car. 4 hours without moving (I stopped at a rest stop for a nap on the way) is sooooo bad after running a marathon and a half. I had decided to call in to work Monday for post-marathon soreness, but also because of an ongoing minor health crisis. I saw the doc and then the orthopedic doc and my foot is pretty beat up. Nothing some time won't heal though :) Signed up for Goofy 09 if that tells you anything (other than the fact that I am crazy!!)
Tried to go to work today but they sent me home since I don't have a note from the doc saying its ok to work with the aircast on my foot. sigh. Now i have to work during spring break to make up some days. this sucks. Oh well. Only 8 weeks until Gate River Run and 362 days until Goofy! GO NF MARATHON TEAM! :) |

| here i go |
[Sep. 12th, 2007|07:32 pm] |
here is the much awaited update to my life.
I am in Delray Beach. I am working in the inpatient rehab department at Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital at Delray Medical Center. I absolutely love this internship. If they were to offer me a job in May after graduation, I would take it, no questions asked.
Inpatient rehab is a place where you make, in my opinion, the most difference in someones life. My caseload is mostly spinal cord injuries, with some brain injury and stroke thrown in. I have also seen an amputee and some joint replacements, but that was mostly to show me the population of people who can come. When I was 10, I watched a movie called "Rise and Walk, the Dennis Byrd story." It was a made for tv movie, but it shaped my life. I saw the way his PT worked with him (he has a spinal cord injury) and I knew i wanted to be a PT. anyway, the point of this is, that working with my patients who have spinal cord injuries has shown me that i did not make a mistake. I LOVE it! I cannot emphasize that enough. I remember thinking that my acute care internship dragged on forever and the days felt like they were each 3902101 hours long. I cannot believe that this week is midterm already. I am devastated, in a way. excited because it is so nice to enjoy something this much and because i get to move on to my next site and try something new, but I will be sad to leave this site.
I go home Tuesday and Thursday nights to run with my brother in law Jason. Then I eat dinner and shower, and then drive back to Delray. Monday and Wednesday, I have dinner with my Dad's cousin and her husband. I live here in a 55+ community, so after work, its to the pool with all the people here. I usually get a note saying meet us at the pool. I usually oblige. Then Vic makes dinner, and then i disappear into my room and play on the internets. We watch tv or movies together once a week. Friday, I leave work and go to Wellington for the weekend. Last weekend, I went to Gators Dockside to watch the game with the rest of the palm beach gator club. This weekend, I am taking Jonah to get his first Tiger Scout (cub scouts) belt loops. pretty cool! I'm hoping to find out about my apartment in SC and then watch the football games with Jeff and Kelly. Its also pretty nice to be able to see the boys so frequently. Life is good!
anyway, the gist of this update is to say I am alive, happy and feeling good! i have about 4 months until my marathon and a half. i am making a difference in the lives of the patients i treat, and i can see that every day. life is good. |

| i will go study in a minute... |
[Aug. 6th, 2007|11:55 am] |
today was exam number 3 of 5. almost over! wow! sad.
but, i will not be sad. I have been having a realllllllly good month. and for that, i will be happy. and share my stories :)
I went back to school after the wedding on a Monday. The week went quickly, as did the whole month of July. Saturday, I headed down to Orlando. Brad came up to Orlando, and Jesse, Eric, Brad and I went to Medieval Times for dinner. so much fun. the green knight lost. Jesse was pissed, and afterwards, she let him know. They all bought alcohol and we went back to the timeshare Jesse and Eric had. Good times had by all and we went to bed at some ridiculous hour. The next morning, I got up and went for a run and when i came back, Brad was finally awake. Then the married couple woke up. We got McD for lunch and went to the Central Florida Zoo. A little bit of a disappointment, but oh well. We went to a Japanese steakhouse for dinner that night. double yum. I stayed over again and drove back to Gainesville monday morning.
Again, the week flew by which sucked a little this time because it was the packing and moving week. I donated a ton of stuff to goodwill and the rest came here to Beth and Patricks. Then, I loaded the car again with the stuff that was going to Tampa. Jesse called late Saturday night and told me to come, so i drove. Family friends Cindy and Chelsea were in Tampa for Busch Gardens. They had year passes... they took J and E. A lot of the rides were closed so they asked for passes to come back sunday. C and C asked also even though it didnt matter for them, and put their names in as Katie and Brad. So, we got to go to Busch Gardens Sunday. Again, a lot of fun was had. I didnt sleep much again that weekend.
Miles the car has been having issues lately though too. Last week, he needed a new sunroof because his rotted through (the last owners neglected to tell me he had spent time in LA, err, the Gulf of Mexico). On the way home from Tampa, his transmission died. Lucky for me, and unlucky for my discover card, he is all fixed now.
Being carless for a couple of days sucked, but i lived. School, home, gym was the schedule of the week. I don't really know where the time has been going. The weekend came again. I went to Tampa yet again, because Jesse threw a very lovely housewarming party. she made meatballs and eggplant parm and baked ziti and yummy cookies. Eric's mom, dad and brother came, my mom and dad and brother came, Jesse's old roomie, Roomie (Kristin) came and their friends Josh and Sarah came. We told old stories of us kids growing up. I really enjoyed spending time with all the families. It was nice. I came back last night to start/finish studying for differential diagnosis.
This morning was the diff exam. I did ok i think. not great. but oh well. I got an award! I guess she gives out 3 awards at the end of the semester she calls House, MD awards (like the show). I got one for integrating a case study presented in class with an experience I had in the hospital last semester. Let's just say that although it is a piece of paper, it pretty much made my day today. :)
studying will now commence for orthotics and prosthetics exam tomorrow. look for another post when all of this nonsense is said and done. i have a very fun and busy next few weeks! :) |

| AMAZING! |
[Mar. 4th, 2007|08:42 am] |
I drove to Tampa Friday afternoon and soon after, met up with Eric, who let me in the apartment. After watching most of season 1 of The Office together, Jesse came home from work. Much secrecy ensued, and they finally agreed to give me one of my birthday presents :) early, i know, but it was kinda why i came here - they had a surprise for me. On the box of little army men, there was a Mickey Mouse sticker!!! I said, Are we going to Disney!??!?!?!?! and then Jesse sighed, changed the channel and said, here is your second clue. and she put on ESPN! This weekend was ESPN the Weekend at Disney!!!!! Jesse and Eric ROCK! Then we had an amazing dinner - what i usually request for my birthday dinner - chicken cutlets, mashed potatoes and peas! She is really an awesome sister.
I was like the kid in the Disney commercial yesterday morning. I couldn't sleep, I was so excited. I couldn't believe they remembered it was this weekend, number 1, and that they wanted to take me made me soooooooooo happy. We had a wonderful breakfast of eggs and biscuits and then got out the door. I think it was the earliest I have ever been at the park with a family member :) We got there in time to watch the conversation with Drew Brees. Then we were on the morning edition of SportsCenter! After much fun, we went on Star Tours and then got in line to wait for Stump the Schwab with David Robinson, Sheryl Swoopes and Steve Smith. Jesse wanted me to be a contestant, but i realllllly don't know enough trivia to do anything, so we watched! I got my picture taken with Howie Schwab, but then everyone else got whisked out of the theater. At that point, we decided to head over to the ESPN Sports Zone. That was super cool! I don't think we've ever really had fun with all ESPN brings to this, so we tried it out this time. We got to bat in batting cages, throw and have our speed checked, golf, drive an indy car (you got to sit in the car and then it was hooked up to an xbox), sit at the sportscenter desk, and catch a football pass. It was neat. The best part came over by the basketball stuff though. David Robinson and Sheryl Swoopes came out to the sportszone. David started to play knockout with some kids on the court and then signed autographs. We thought that was it, but then they started asking for people who wanted to play 5 v 5. Jesse made me raise my hand, and then they said, the girl in blue (i was wearing my blue hat and blue florida baseball sweatshirt). I had to fight my way through the line to get on the court and then they picked teams and decided it would be girls v boys. Holy crap, i was playing basketball (have I mentioned the last time i played was the summer between 5th and 6th grades??????) with 2 freaking All-Stars! So we played for about 20 minutes and the boys won 5-2. I got to huddle with Swoopes and high five Robinson and it was truly AMAZING. No other words can describe my experience, except to say once in a lifetime! Jesse took so many wonderful pictures that when I can, I will post up here.
The rest of the day was more of the same. We saw Bill Walton, watched Baseball Tonight Live with Roger Clemens, saw Thurman Thomas and Herschel Walker, went on the Great Movie Ride and left before we got caught in the rain. Had a fantastic dinner at uno and then got back to Tampa at a reasonable hour. It was such a great day, and I am so glad I got to spend it with Jesse and Eric! :) I heart them! |

| rain rain go away |
[Feb. 11th, 2006|11:13 am] |
Last night's baseball game was awesome. the game, the atmosphere, the everything. it was everything I have been missing. our shirts say "guest relations" instead of "usher" this year. nice. anyway, we had to be there 2 hours before game time last night. it got realllllly cold. we got new jackets to wear at work too. double nice. I took mine home cause I was cold and I have to work today anyway. thats why the rain should go away.
Brandon's mom came and found me halfway through the game. that lady is awesome. I missed her. Brandon hit a homerun also! I saw Jill, our prof from the class I took with half the baseball team. I missed her too. My friend Grant was awesome enough to drive me, but thats cause when he crashed his car last season, I gave him rides :) I love baseball season. it makes me smile. I saw all my people... the old people, Jaro's mom, Justin Tordi and his grandparents (I saw the ring - BLING!), Colleen and I laughed a lot! When we got to stop working, we picked 3 really sweet seats right behind homeplate, and she, her brother Mike and I sat and watched the end. In matching jackets. we looked official. It was great. goodness... its soooo nice to be happy and me again! for real. I hope the rain stops soon otherwise it is going to be a miserable day though... cold and wet. as happy as I am at baseball, that may just put me over the edge.
Game today at 4pm! come watch us beat the bearcats! :) yay! |

Joshua just bought me an ipod shuffle for my birthday! It should be here in 5 days!
I hope I don't use my whole February love quota before V-day :) My February 8th resolution is to appreciate my family more and to fight less. And not just because they buy me stuff cause I don't want this to sound like I have to love them so they buy me presents. I sincerely want to enjoy spending time with my family more. Christmas break was a definite step in the right direction! It is times like these that I really appreciate having grown up in a big, but still loving and close, family. I was telling my friend Jen about Passover at our house and it made me smile to talk about my family and the fun we have. I love that I talk to each of my brothers and sisters almost daily. and thats about all i got right now, because my whole family is calling me and i'm being interrupted :) |

[Feb. 9th, 2006|08:01 pm] |
today I got a present from my dad for Valentine's day. When I was a little girl, I called M&Ms something that sounded to the effect of hama hems or whathaveyou. I can't really spell out the sound. He sent me a box of personalized M&Ms that say hama hama on them. They are light blue and dark blue. I don't think I will ever be able to eat them. For as crazy and whatever that my dad has been and gets (maybe from the MS, maybe from just being Howie), he never EVER forgets the little things. I love him.
*Jesse say are two shades of green and say "Be a nurse" on half, and "Marry a doctor" on the other half. Sarah's are yellow with "Space Shuttle" (Asher) and purple with fire truck (Jonah). Emily's say "Forever Emily" on half and 2/14/06 on the other half.
After a two-day stint like these two days, it was reallllllly nice to have something sooooooooo special to enjoy! I love how I have been able to put "loved" as my mood a lot lately! and baseball starts tomorrow!! triple yay day for me! |

My brother Josh was married to Emily in 2001 by a man (his friend and old roommate) named Bob, who is a screenplay writer. Bob has been living in California for the last few years trying to sell a screenplay. Today I heard he had sold one. It is currently a movie being filmed. Among others, Kevin Bacon has a part in said movie. Apparently, I am now 2 or 3 degrees from Kevin Bacon depending on how you look at it. (I know Bob, but we obviously aren't close - he is my brother's friend) |

I hope that you have a lot of fun time at school. And I hope that you come over to my birthday one day.
And we hope that I get to play with you someday around on your birthday.
The science museum was very fun and I hope that you had a good time in Gainesville too. And I want you to have a good time.
Love, Jonah

| I feel good |
[Jan. 21st, 2006|08:39 am] |
Last night was a fantastically great night. really. Drew has always been talking about people cooking for him cause he can't do it himself, so I invited him over for stir-fry. I cooked, we ate, it was nice. Then he mentioned how he was going to Albert's to play DDR. I think I mentioned the last time we played DDR in this journal, but it was a good time. The night Sara and I went though, we went after the large crowd had gone because I can't deal with too many of the DPT people after hours :) Drew said no one else was coming, so I joined him. We played a couple of games of DDR and then broke out Cranium. Soooooooo fun. I laughed my ass off for most of the night. My two personal favorites were with the green cards - star performer. Albert had to act out "rodeo" and he was freaking hilarious. He acted like he was riding the mechanical bull or doing some sort of wild sex act. My real favorite, however, was a clue I had to act out for Drew to guess. It was another star performer and I had to act like Alice in Wonderland, without mentioning names or places. I have never seen Alice in Wonderland. When time started, I mentioned I had never seen it and was having a hard time coming up with clues and I said, I have tea underground. Drew blurted right out with Alice in Wonderland. It was awesome. I literally couldn't stop laughing for about 5 minutes, we high-fived and Albert and Brenda just looked at us in complete disbelief. amazing. Megan came soon after and we finished the game, talked, looked for SceneIt to no avail and then left around 11 so we could catch the movie at the Reitz at 11:30. We saw Just Like Heaven - glaringly unrealistic, but I did laugh and manage to stay awake. I came home around 1:30 and fell asleep by 2. Now I am awake and ready to face Saturday :) |
